Alumni Update | Reyes, Renfroe Making Case for MLB Home Run Derby
June 30, 2019 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Eugene Emeralds News Release
As the MLB All-Star Break quickly approaches, former Eugene Emeralds and current San Diego Padres teammates Hunter Renfroe and Franmil Reyes are making strong cases to both be included in this year's Home Run Derby.
The national acclaim the two are starting to receive has been a long time coming for the pair of promising Padres prospects, both of whom were members of the 2013 Eugene Emeralds team.
After being drafted in the first round of the 2013 MLB Draft out of Mississippi State, Hunter Renfroe began his professional career in the Emerald Valley where he played in 25 games batting .308 with 4 HR, 18 RBI and a .843 OPS.
Renfroe made his MLB debut in 2016 and has been a staple at the Major League level since 2017. This season, Renfroe is batting .248 with 24 HR and 45 RBI and a .917 OPS.
Meanwhile, his former Emeralds teammate and current Padres teammate, Franmil Reyes, is hitting .248 with 24 and 41 RBI with a .863 OPS. Reyes pulled himself into a tie with Renfroe last night after belting two home runs in the Padres' 12-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Entering Sunday, Reyes has four home runs over his last three games played.
With 24 homers each, the two each rank T-4th in the Major Leagues, trailing only Christian Yelich (MIL), Cody Bellinger (LAD) and Edwin Encarnacion (NYY).
