Montreal, March 14, 2012 -The Montreal Alouettes announced on Wednesday the addition of Matt Sheldon and Brendan Nugent to the team's coaching staff. Sheldon will serve as the team's Linebackers Coach, while Nugent will be an Assistant on Special Teams and be responsable for Offensive Quality Control.
Matt Sheldon comes to the Alouettes backed by 11 years of NFL coaching experience. Most recently, the 43-year-old spent the 2010 and 2011 seasons as Assistant Defensive Backs Coach with the Minnesota Vikings. He was also the Buffalo Bills' Linebackers Coach from 2006 to 2009. Under Sheldon's guidance in 2009, the Bills' linebacking corps helped the team rank second in the league in passing defence. Before joining the Bills, the Schofield, WI native held various coaching roles with the St. Louis Rams from 2001 to 2005.
A former player in his own right, Sheldon played defensive back for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, the alma mater of Alouettes head coach Marc Trestman. Sheldon's coaching career began shortly thereafter as a Defensive Graduate Assistant at the University of Wisconsin in 1997. The following year, Wisconsin's defence led the nation and the Badgers became the first team in Big Ten Conference history to play in consecutive Rose Bowls (1998 and 1999).
Brendan Nugent replaces Carson Walch who will serve as receivers coach beginning in 2012. Nugent spent the past five seasons performing various coaching duties with the William & Mary Tribe where he handled both the running backs and the tight ends. The 29-year-old from White Plains, N.Y most recently served as an Offensive Assistant at William & Mary. His collegiate coaching resume also includes his time as the Offensive Undergraduate Assistant at the University of Iowa in 2005 and 2006.
"We are very happy that these two high-quality coaches have accepted to join our already talented coaching staff," said coach Trestman. "These coaches are versatile and hard-working and we are excited to have them join our team."
