Houston Dash defender Allysha Chapman and forward Nichelle Prince were named to the Canadian Women's National Team 18-player roster ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Canada Soccer and the Canadian Olympic Committee announced today. Canada's head coach Bev Priestman also named Dash midfielder Sophie Schmidt as an alternate replacement player.
Both Chapman and Prince were part of the first Canadian Olympic team to win back-to-back medals at a summer Olympic Games in 2016. Canada will kick off their Tokyo 2020 journey when they face Japan in the opening match in Sapporo on July 21 followed by Chile on July 24. Three days later, Canada is set to play against Dash forward Rachel Daly and Great Britain in Kashima on July 27.
Chapman has represented Canada in two FIFA Women's World Cups, playing every minute in five games during the team's quarterfinal run on home soil in 2015 and appearing in all four games of the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup. The defender has earned 62 starts in 79 appearances for Canada, scoring one goal and providing three assists. A key part of Houston's backline, Chapman has earned 58 caps in four seasons with Houston.
Prince has scored 12 goals and tallied 10 assists in her 66 career appearances for Canada. The forward lifted Canada over New Zealand with her first World Cup goal on June 15, 2019 helping Canada qualify for the knockout round. Prince joined Houston in 2017 and has 65 appearances tallying seven goals and five assists with the club. The forward most recently scored Houston's first goal in a 2-1 victory against Chicago on May 29.
One of Canada's veterans, Schmidt first joined the national team since 2005 and made her fourth World Cup appearance in France during the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup. Schmidt has 205 senior caps for Canada and has tallied 19 goals and 20 assists. Schmidt was inducted into the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame on October 23, 2019.
