All Hands on Deck: Stingers Sweep Bucks with 11-1 Win
July 25, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Willmar Stingers News Release
Waterloo, Iowa - The Stingers' offense is in the midst of one of its best stretches of the season, and that continued in a big way Friday night against Waterloo.
Willmar pounded out 14 hits and scored eight runs between the seventh and eighth innings to run away from the Bucks and sweep the two-game series with an 11-1 win.
The Stingers (36-18, 13-7 second half) scored right out of the gate with three runs in the first two innings, which was more than enough for starter Brian Kehner. Kehner allowed an unearned run in the second, but allowed just one more hit the rest of the way, retiring 10 batters in a row at one point and 16 of the final 17 batters he saw before departing after the seventh inning.
The game then remained a 3-1 Willmar lead, with neither team scoring for the next four innings after the second. That was until the Stingers' offense erupted in the seventh and eighth innings for eight combined runs. Willmar notched a pair in the seventh on three straight hits, including back-to-back doubles by Reagan Fowler and Eddie Estrada, the second of which plated two runs.
But the big inning came in the eighth, when the Stingers sent 11 men to the plate against the Bucks' bullpen and scored six times. The first five players for Willmar all reached to start the eighth, with Storm Wilson doubling home two to make it a 7-1 lead. After Ky Parrott walked and Fowler struck out, Estrada singled with the bases loaded to bring home another two runs and balloon his RBI total to five on the night. But the Stingers weren't done, and Brian Pruett delivered another two-run single later in the inning to make it 11-1.
Seven different players recorded at least one hit for the Stingers in the win, while seven different players also scored runs, including Billy Quirke who scored twice and had three hits in five trips. Kehner notched his third win of the season, throwing seven, two-hit innings, striking out six without allowing a walk.
The Stingers continue their five-game road trip with a pair of games in Mankato on Saturday and Sunday, with both games slated for 6:05 p.m. starts.
