
Anchors drop opener to Huskies

Alexandria, Minn. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors fell to the Duluth Huskies 7-4 at Knute Nelson Memorial Park on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Anchors to 12-10 and 24-33 on the season.
Duluth got on the board in the first against Graylon Brown. Cal Stevenson and Kyle Comer singled to start the game. Justin Paulsen singled in Stevenson for the game's first run. Alex Wojciechowski followed with a fourth-straight base hit plating Comer putting Duluth ahead 2-0.
Terrin Vavra reached on an error by Brown to start the second and he went to second on Stevenson's single. Comer bunted both into scoring position. Paulsen grounded out to short bringing home Vavra. A single off the bat of Wojciechowski scored Stevenson and Colton Waltner doubled in Wojciechowski making it 5-0.
The Blue Anchors cut into the deficit in the fourth. Drew Fearing was hit by a pitch to start the inning and he went to second on a wild pitch. On a 1-1 offering from Mitch Bauer, Trooper Reynolds went deep to centerfield making the score 5-2.
Josh Merrigan flexed his muscle again in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer to centerfield cutting Duluth's lead down to 5-3.
The Huskies added some insurance runs in the seventh against Josh Baumgart. Paulsen singled to lead things off and he went to second on a walk to TJ Martin. After a pitching change, Jean Figueroa hit a fly ball to left but it was dropped by Nehwon Norkeh bringing in two runs to make the score 7-3.
Alexandria tried to make a rally attempt in the eighth against the Duluth bullpen. Steve Sada singled with one out and went to second on a ground out. Merrigan hit a routine ball to short but the throw got away from the shortstop and Sada came around to score and make the score 7-4.
Brown (2-3) took the loss pitching two innings giving up five runs, two earned, on eight hits while striking out a batter. Tyler Hasper pitched two scoreless innings allowing two hits and walk with three batters struck out. Baumgart threw 2.2 innings giving up two runs, zero earned, on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Ciji Ramos finished the seventh throwing 1/3 of an inning. Austin Cornish struck out the side in a perfect eighth. Kody Knause finished the game facing three hitters, striking out one.
Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Steve Sada (2B) - The second baseman went 3-for-4 at the plate and in his last two games he's a combined 7-for-9.
