Alexandria Aces Make Four Transactions

June 9, 2013 - United League Baseball (ULB)
Alexandria Aces News Release

Prior to Saturday's doubleheader sweep at Rio Grande Valley, the Alexandria Aces made four transactions that led directly to their sweep of the WhiteWings.

Outfielder Austin Newell was reactivated from the inactive list, where he was placed on Wednesday with eye ulcers. To make room for Newell, one of the Aces' leading hitters with a .308 average, two home runs and 12 RBIs, Alexandria released outfielder Daiki Komori.

Komori was 0 for 3 with a run scored and an error in his only game for the Aces.

Lefthanded pitcher Dan Schmidt was also signed before the game. Schmidt, who would go on to beat the WhiteWings in the second game of the doubleheader by allowing only one earned run in five innings, is a 25-year-old lefthander from Australia who has posted a lifetime 12-5 record in two seasons (2010-11) for the Australian Baseball League's Perth Heat.

Schmidt has also pitched in the USA in both the American Association and the CanAm League, posting a 7-7 lifetime record for the Brockton Sox, Fort Worth Cats, and Grand Prairie AirHogs in 2010-11.

To make room for Schmidt, the Aces inactivated LSU-Alexandria product Aryo Fleming. Fleming was 0-1 with a 12.00 ERA in four appearances for the Aces.

The Aces return home on June 10 for a four game series in what is shaping up to be an early battle for first place in the United League. All game times in the series at Bringhurst Field are 7:05 p.m.
