Alexandria Aces News Release

HARLINGEN- The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning to propel them to an 8-5 victory against the Alexandria Aces Sunday night.

The WhiteWings collected four singles, five walks, and were struck by one Ryan Zimmerman pitch (1-1). Zimmerman, who came into three game with a 1.89 earned run average, could only retire one of 10 batters he faced and lasted just 2/3 of an inning.

The Aces would make the score 6-5 following a 3-run fourth inning highlighted by Doug Freeman's first home run of the season, but left the bases loaded in the frame off Antony Bello (1-3).

Rio Grande Valley added single runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning off Jadd Schmeltzer, who pitched 4 2/3 innings of long relief to keep the Aces in the game. Leo Madrid also added 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

The WhiteWings' Aaron Gates collected three hits and drove in two runs, including the final tally in the bottom of the sixth, to give him a United League leading 18 on the season. Kyle Wahl retired the side in order in the ninth to collect his fourth save of the season.

The game leaves both the Aces and WhiteWings with a split in the four game series and identical 8-8 records. The Aces return home Monday to begin a four game series with the first place Fort Worth Cats (10-6), with all games during the weekday series starting at 7:05 p.m.
