Alderson Pitches Giants Past Visalia In Series Finale

Tim Alderson tossed six effective innings for his ninth win of the year in leading the San Jose Giants to a 7-1 victory over the Visalia Oaks on Friday night at Municipal Stadium. Alderson limited the Oaks to just one run during his stint on the mound as San Jose snapped their season-high four-game losing streak. With the victory, the Giants improve their overall record to 57-34 - tops in the California League.

Alderson (9-3) surrendered five hits with just one walk and six strikeouts. The right-hander threw 89 pitches in winning his third consecutive start. Alderson is now tied for second in the California League in victories.

Bobby Felmy drove home four runs to lead the San Jose offensive attack. Felmy blasted a two-out, three-run homer in a key fifth inning rally while Brad Boyer (2-for-4, RBI) and Brett Pill (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) also delivered multiple-hit performances.

The Giants jumped in front with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Consecutive one-out singles from Boyer and Daniel Ortmeier put runners on first and third before Felmy bounced into a fielder's choice to score the first run. After Felmy stole second base, Pill grounded an RBI single into left field for a 2-0 San Jose advantage.

The Giants took control of the game with four runs in the fifth. Sharlon Schoop led off with a double to the fence in deep left center field. After a groundout, Brock Bond drew a walk and then Boyer lined a single into center field plating Schoop. Two batters later, Felmy stepped to the plate and crushed the first pitch of his at-bat over the wall in right field for a three-run homer. The home run, Felmy's sixth of the year, extended the Giants lead to 6-0.

Alderson struck out the side in the top of the first and held the Oaks to just one hit over the initial three frames. Visalia threatened in the top of the fourth when an error, a single and a walk loaded the bases with one out. But Alderson would pitch out of trouble with back-to-back strikeouts of Konrad Schmidt and Manny Ferrer.

Alderson worked a scoreless top of the fifth before the Oaks struck for a single run in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Michael Mee singled before Schmidt doubled to the gap in right center field to bring home Visalia's only run of the contest. Alderson though retired the next hitter, Ferrer, on a groundout to complete the sixth inning.

San Jose scored their final run in the bottom of the eighth on consecutive two-out doubles from Pill and Mike Mooney.

Taylor Wilding was credited with his team-leading ninth save of the year after throwing three scoreless innings to end the game. Wilding retired the first seven batters he faced before allowing a one-out single to Schmidt in the top of the ninth. The right-hander though set down the next two hitters to seal the victory. All total, Wilding struck out three and walked none.

Notes: Visalia still won three-of-four games in the series ... Alderson is ninth in the California League in ERA (3.24) ... Ortmeier was 1-for-4 in the fifth game of his rehabilitation assignment ... San Jose out-hit the Oaks by a 9-6 margin ... Catcher Dayton Buller was placed on the Disabled List before the game ... The Giants improved their second half record to 14-7.

On Deck: The Giants open a three-game series at Stockton on Saturday night. First pitch against the Ports at Banner Island Ballpark is scheduled for 7:05 P.M. Chris Begg (1-0, 1.50 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Stockton is expected to counter with Scott Moore (1-1, 7.53 ERA). The game can be heard live on www.sjgiants.com.
