Albuquerque Upsets Rio Grande Valley At 2010 NBA D-League Showcase

January 4, 2010 - NBA G League (G League) News Release

BOISE, ID Jan. 4, 2010 - The 2010 NBA Development League Showcase began with an upset, as the Albuquerque Thunderbirds (5-9) knocked off the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, 101-84 in the first game of this week's 16-game schedule being played at the Qwest Arena in Boise, Idaho.

Carlos Powell and Yaroslav Korolev, the 12th overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, each scored 20 points to lead Albuquerque, which shot 49 percent from the field, including 8-for-19 from three-point range. Antoine Agudio added 17 points, five rebounds and five assists for the Thunderbirds.

"It was a little tough getting up so early to play. I've never played a game at 11:00 in my life," said Powell, who was in training camp with the Phoenix Suns this past year. "In a situation like this, you just try to play to the best of your abilities, hope the team gets a win and hope maybe someone takes notice."

Garret Temple scored a team-high 18 points for Rio Grande Valley, including 11 in the opening quarter. His backcourt mate Will Conroy added 15 points and six assists for the Vipers (10-4), who committed 19 turnovers and only shot 6-for-21 from three-point range. Joey Dorsey, on assignment from the Houston Rockets, grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to go with eight points for Rio Grande Valley.

The Vipers return to action Wednesday against Bakersfield. Albuquerque takes on Tulsa Thursday.
