Albuquerque Defeats Tulsa At 2010 NBA D-League Showcase

January 7, 2010 - NBA G League (G League) News Release

BOISE, ID Jan. 7, 2010 - It remains to be seen what the future holds for Albuquerque's Carlos Powell in terms of his NBA potential. For the time being, if you need to win a game, he's a pretty good horse to have in the stable.

With the game tied at 90-90, Powell scored seven straight points (eight of his team's final 10), as the Thunderbirds edged the Tulsa 66ers, 101-97 the first of four games on the final day of the 2010 NBA D-League Showcase.

Powell, who was in training camp with the Phoenix Suns this season, finished with 25 points, seven assists and four rebounds. His heroics down the stretch came after he took a nasty spill early in the fourth quarter when he was accidentally undercut on a drive and fell on his back.

"We had a little lapse in the third quarter. We weren't getting many baskets. Weren't getting many stops either," said Powell. "Late in the fourth, the team just put the ball in my hands and told me to do what I do and make stuff happen."

Chad Toppert added 18 points and Antoine Agudio had 16 for Albuquerque, which won both of their games this week in Boise to improve to 6-9.

Tulsa's D.J. White, on assignment from the Oklahoma City Thunder, had another strong game for the 66ers, finishing with 22 points and 11 rebounds. The chatter in Boise was that White, who's struggled with injuries since being the 29th overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, is inching closer to claiming a spot in the Thunder's rotation.

Albuquerque host Reno Saturday. Tulsa (10-7). Tulsa returns to action a week from today against Austin.
