Albany Conquest to meet Wolves in home opener Friday

Albany, N.Y. April 14, 2004 – The Albany Conquest, back-to-back Northeast Division Champions of arenafootball2, will play their home opener against the Manchester Wolves on Friday (April 16) at 7:30 p.m. at the Pepsi Arena featuring performances by the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.

The Albany Conquest (0-1), will battle their division foe, the Manchester Wolves (0-2). Manchester has suffered two straight defeats, while the Conquest lost their season opener, 70-55, at Cape Fear last Saturday. Both of Manchester's losses were against the Quad City Steamwheelers, a 71-32 loss on the road on April 3 and 45-42 defeat in their home opener on April 10.

"We have had a couple of great days of practice in the Pepsi Arena this week," said Albany Conquest Head Coach Steve Matthews. "Playing a game at home, after a tough loss last week, will be just what we need. We look forward to rebounding and know we will have the support of fans in the Capital Region," added Coach Matthews.

The Wolves' have dropped five of their previous six games to the Conquest dating back to 2002. Both teams earned trips to last year's ArenaCup Playoffs, Albany by way of winning the Northeast Division and the Wolves' with a wild-card birth. Both teams advanced to the second round of the playoffs before being eliminated. Each of the teams' six meetings have been during regular season play, including their most recent meeting when Albany defeated the Wolves', 54-51, at the Pepsi Arena on July 26, 2003. The Wolves ' lone win against the Conquest in six attempts was a 52-45 victory last season on April 18, 2003 in Uncasville, Conn.

Conquest QB Gus Ornstein, who made his first start at QB for the Conquest last week at Cape Fear, threw seven TD passes with just one interception for 315 yards, giving him a 109.9 pass rating after one week (7th in league). His 315 passing yards per game ranks him number one among af2 passers. Ornstein joined the Conquest last season as the teams' reserve QB.
