Quad City keeps top spot in poll

Published on April 14, 2004 under arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - For the third straight week, the Quad City Steamwheelers earned the No. 1 spot in the af2 Coaches' Poll, the league office announced today. The Tennessee Valley Vipers held on to the No. 2 spot, meaning a showdown between the No. 1 and No. 2 teams is on tap this week when the Vipers face the Steamwheelers on Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. ET at the Mark of the Quad Cities.

Quad City received 18 of a possible 24 first-place votes and 260 points overall. The Vipers, who earned two first-place votes, totaled 247 points. With a big 70-55 win over Albany, the Cape Fear Wildcats jumped from seventh to third in this week's poll with 171 points, including one first place vote. The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz moved from 10th to fourth place with 153 points. New teams to the Top 12 this week include the Louisville Fire (seventh) and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers (11th).

Along with the matchup of No. 1 versus No. 2, two other teams in the Top 12 meet this weekend as the No. 7 ranked Louisville Fire host the No. 9 ranked Macon Knights on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The entire Week 2 Coaches' Poll is listed below. The number in parentheses indicates the number of first place votes the team received.

Each week during the season af2 coaches vote for the Top 12 teams in the league by ranking them one through 12 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 12 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 12th receives one point. Total points determine the Top 12 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes is ranked higher. The af2 Coaches' Poll is announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll results have no bearing on postseason qualification.
