Alabama Slammers News Release
BIRMINGHAM- Today, the Alabama Slammers Hockey Team began as the first group of volunteers joining a new program, Driving Force. Kid One Transport's Driving Force volunteer program will begin opening the door for volunteer drivers, to get behind the wheel. Driving Force volunteers will help Kid One reach the over 117,000 children in Alabama living in a home with no car when they need transportation to medical care.
The Slammers will start making the trip after practice, at the Pelham Civic Complex down the road to Hoover, as they begin volunteering at Kid One Transport.
"We are very excited that Kid One is seeing support from the sports community here in Birmingham. We have had a strong need for a core group of volunteers in 2004, which can help us in a number of areas including driving the children that Kid One serves," said Russell Jackson, CEO/Founder. "We are so thankful that the Alabama Slammers are stepping up to fill this void."
The Slammers Hockey Team composed of 16 members will begin to visit the Kid One offices on a monthly basis to assist with a variety of tasks. This Friday night their game against the Miami Manatees will be a fundraising venue for Kid One. Russell Jackson will be sharing the inspirational story of Kid One Transport on the ice during half-time.
Kid One families have been provided free transportation and tickets to the game as they experience a night of excitement on the ice.
"Anything that we can do to encourage these children and their families is worth our time and efforts," said Mandy Fenick, Community Relations Director of the Alabama Slammers. " We are looking forward to working with Kid One this season and for many years to come."
Tickets to the Kid One Night at the Alabama Slammers can be bought by calling the Slammers at 328-7825, at www.slammershockey.com, through Ticketmaster and can also be purchased at the Pelham Civic Complex box office on game day.
