New York, NYâ The Chase Bank has named Akron Aeros right-handed pitcher Jeremy Guthrie as the Eastern League's Chase Most Valuable Player for the month of April. Guthrie had an outstanding month for the Aeros, compiling a record of 3-0 with a 1.27 ERA, 17 strikeouts and only 6 walks in his five starts. In his professional debut against the Erie SeaWolves on April 3, the 24-year old allowed just three hits and three walks while striking out three batters in six shutout innings to earn the first win of his career. In his final start of the month the 6'1", 200 lb. hurler struck out six Altoona batters while tossing a complete game three-hit shutout to pick up his third win of the month. The Las Vegas, Nevada native was selected by the Cleveland Indians the first round of the June 2002 draft after going 13-2 with a 2.51 ERA in 20 starts at Stanford University during his junior season. Guthrie was a near unanimous selection for the award, receiving more than twice as many votes as any other nominee.
Guthrie will receive his award later this month in an on-field presentation at Canal Park in Akron and he will also be recognized at the Chase MVP Awards banquet when the season ending winners are announced.
