
AirHogs Capture Game One 6-5

Fort Worth, TX (08.25.08) - J.B. Tucker hit a two-run homerun in the top of the eighth to break open a 4-4 tie, as the Grand Prairie AirHogs overcame two deficits to win 6-5 over the Fort Worth Cats on Monday night. The AirHogs lead the best of five first-round playoff series 1-0.
Fort Worth scored the first run in the bottom of the second inning. With runners on the corners, Charles Carter hit a chopper through the right side that plated Jake Gautreau from third base.
In the bottom of the fourth, Fort Worth took a 2-0 advantage. Nelson Teilon rounded second on a single for John Allen and came all the way home, as the ball was misplayed on a fielding error by Aaron Garza in leftfield.
Garza redeemed himself in the top of the fifth inning with a solo blast to left field to lead off the inning for G.P.'s first run. The AirHogs tied the score at 2-2 with an RBI double into right-center off the bat of Billy Munoz that brought in David Espinosa.
The Cats jumped right back on top in the bottom of the fifth with a 4-2 advantage. Brian Fryer reached on a fielding error at short by David Espinosa. He would score after reaching third thanks to a sacrifice fly for Pat O'Sullivan. Fort Worth put another run in on an RBI single for Nelson Teilon into shallow center.
Grand Prairie roared back in the top of the sixth to tie it up at 4-4. With two outs and runners on second and third, Brandon Carter shot a line drive through the left side of the diamond to send Mike Conroy and Derek Nicholson home to tie up the score.
J.B. Tucker rocketed a two-run shot to left field in the top of the eighth, giving G.P. their first lead of 6-4.
Fort Worth made things interesting with a solo shot for John Allen in the bottom of the eighth off Chris Homer to make the score 6-5 in favor of Grand Prairie. Charles Carter reached on the fifth fielding error of the day on a grounder to short. He would be stranded on second as the closer James Morrison fanned the final two batters to get out of the jam.
Nat Harris started for Grand Prairie and earned the no decision. He went four innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on six hits with two walks and no strikeouts. Geivy Garcia (1-0) was the winning pitcher for the AirHogs. He threw a scoreless inning with one strikeout. Morrison threw 1.2 scoreless innings and earned his first save of the post-season.
Joel Kirsten was the starting pitcher for Fort Worth and got the no decision. He lasted 5.1 innings, allowing four runs, all earned, on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Brian Martin (0-1) got the loss for Fort Worth, lasting just three batters with one hit, two runs, both earned, with one walk and one strikeout.
Grand Prairie will take on the Fort Worth Cats in game 2 of the Southern Division Championship on Tuesday at 7:05 PM at LaGrave Field in Fort Worth. RHP Jose Cordero (4-4, 3.49 ERA) will go up against RHP Lee Gwaltney (9-2, 2.57 ERA).
