SIOUX FALLS, SD -- Pat Mahomes allowed just 5 hits and Kris Regas retired the last 4 batters to notch the save as Sioux Falls stopped the Explorers 2-1 Monday night at the BirdCage.

The Canaries scored in the bottom of the first as Cameron Cheek gave up a leadoff walk to Kennard Bibbs and then Grant Richardson singled. Will Smith would bounce into a double play but Beau Torbert lined a single off the wall in left to score Bibbs to make it 1-0 Sioux Falls.

Mahomes would shut down the X's through the first 6 innings, allowing just 2 hits. Walter Young, however, hit a long drive to right for a monster HR to tie the game at 1-1 leading off the 7th.

The Yellowbirds would rally in the bottom of the 7th as Ben Van Iderstine got a leadoff single and would move to second on a bunt. That would knock Cheek from the game and Matt Kretzschmar came in but walked Paul Smyth and Tim Hutting pushed a single to right to score Van Iderstine to break the tie.

The X's would threaten in the 8th with a 2 out single by Nick McCoola. That would knock Mahomes from the game and Sioux Falls brought in their closer Kris Regas, who uncorked a wild pitch to Alex Llanos that moved McCoola to 2nd. But Regas would rebound to strike out Llanos to end the inning and then Regas got the X's 1-2-3 in the 9th to end the game.

Sioux Falls takes a 1-0 lead in the Best-of-5 series and the X's will look to rebound in Game Two. Alexander Francisco will get the start for the Explorers while the Canaries will turn to the lefty Ryan Ford. Game time is 7:05 with coverage on 1360 KSCJ and xsbaseball.com.
