LOOKING AHEAD:
The race atop the East Division heats up this weekend as second-place Hershey visits third-place Philadelphia on Friday (7:05 ET) before hosting top-seeded Bridgeport on Saturday (7:00 ET). The Bears are 19-6-7-1 against the rest of the AHL, but 1-7-1-2 against these two foes, including dropping all six meetings with the Phantoms by a combined score of 27-10 this season. Philadelphia has won four straight overall, each by a single goal, while the Bears are unbeaten in four and have just one regulation loss in their last 10 (5-1-3-1). The Sound Tigers, who remain without injured leading scorer Jeff Hamilton, are an ordinary 6-5-0-1 since their 20-game unbeaten streak.
Grand Rapids and Chicago renew their rivalry on Friday at Van Andel Arena (7:30 ET, 6:30 CT) in the sixth meeting of the season between the top two teams in the West Division. Wolves captain Steve Maltais has opened 2004 with a seven-game scoring streak after struggling with just four assists and a minus-10 rating in December. Jiri Hudler has a point in 10 straight AHL games for the Griffins over an eight-week stretch that has included stints in the NHL and the World Junior Championships. Grand Rapids enters the weekend with a six-point lead over Chicago in a bid for a third straight division title.
Only four points separate five teams in the middle of the North Division standings, and Cleveland wraps up a six-game road swing with three matches this weekend, including key division battles Friday in Rochester (7:35 ET) and Saturday in Syracuse (7:30 ET). Garrett Stafford, who leads AHL rookie defensemen in scoring this season, has eight points in the last five games for the Barons, and Miroslav Zalesak has found the scoresheet in 15 of his last 16 outings (13g, 10a). Cleveland is 11-11-3-2 against division opponents this season and 9-4-3-3 overall on the road.
