October 23, 2002 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release

Richard Jackman's goal with 8:20 left in the third period stood up as the game-winner as St. John's knocked off Manitoba, 5-4, to win its home opener at a sold-out Mile One Stadium on Tuesday night. Jackman, a first-round pick in the 1996 draft, was playing his first game on a conditioning assignment after missing most of the 2001-02 season. Ex-Leaf Jeff Farkas and ex-Moose Brad Leeb and Josh Holden were all held scoreless against their former teams. The clubs meet again in St. John's tonight (7:35 NT, 5:05 CT).

LOOKING AHEAD:

Houston puts its perfect record on the line tonight against the Cleveland Barons at Gund Arena (7:05 ET, 6:05 CT). The 5-0-0-0 Aeros have had to come from behind to win each of their last four games, including three straight on the road last weekend. Houston has been paced by a pair of former Springfield Falcons, in leading scorer Jean-Guy Trudel (3+5=8 pts.) and goaltender Dieter Kochan (3-0-0, 2.00, .937), while the Barons (1-1-1-0) hope to be boosted by the return of goaltender Vesa Toskala, assigned on Tuesday when San Jose came to terms with Evgeni Nabokov.

Springfield and Manchester face off tonight at the Verizon Wireless Arena (7:05 ET) in a battle of New England clubs. The Falcons got Marty McSorley his first coaching victory on Sunday, 2-1 over Providence, after starting the year with four losses. The Monarchs are unbeaten in three straight after starting the year with a loss to Lowell, with former Stanley Cup champion Steve Kelly leading Manchester with 2+4=6 pts. on the season. Ramzi Abid has 3+3=6 pts. in five games to pace the Falcons.

After scoring six goals in their first five games, the Rochester Americans go for their first win of the season tonight in Hamilton (7:00 ET). The Amerks have allowed 10 special teams goals this year (seven PPG, three SHG), and after setting an AHL record for power play futility at 10.4% efficiency last season, Rochester is off to a 1-for-51 start (including a current 0-for-44 slump) with the man advantage this year. Jason Botterill has provided half of the Amerks' offense with three goals, and rookie Ryan Miller has been admirable with a 1.93 GAA despite an 0-3-1 record. Hamilton's trio of Jason Ward, Jani Rita and Benoit Gratton have combined for 8+7=15 pts. in four games, and the 'Dogs have added G Mathieu Garon on conditioning from Montreal.
