WHAT'S ON TAP:
It's been 16 years since a defending AHL champion failed to reach the following year's Calder Cup Playoffs, and the Saint John Flames are looking to avoid that fate as they visit Manitoba tonight (7:30 CT, 9:30 AT). The Flames, who sit five points behind the Moose for the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, are wrapping up an eight-game road trip (1-4-1-1). Manitoba's Martin Brochu led Saint John to last year's championship, and is 2-0-0 against his old mates this year. Milwaukee's bid for a postseason berth faces a tough test as the Admirals visit Grand Rapids tonight (7:00 ET, 6:00 CT) in the first of a home-and-home. Van Andel Arena hasn't been kind to its guests from Brew City this season, as the Griffins have allowed just three goals and posted three shutouts in the Admirals' first five visits. Petr Sachl has a point in five straight (2+6=8) for Milwaukee, which has gone 7-3-4 in its last 14 games and sits five points out of 10th place in the Western Conference. Providence lost just two of its first 16 home games (10-2-4) this year, but some of the glaze has come off the Dunkin' Donuts Center of late as the B's host Bridgeport tonight (7:05 ET) in the teams' third meeting of the season. Providence, 8-10-0 in its last 18 on home ice, is winless in three (0-1-1-1) since a six-game winning streak landed them back in the thick of the playoff race. A deadline deal with Anaheim has brought Dave Roche back to Bridgeport; the 2001 Calder Cup champion had 22 goals and 32 points in 36 games to start the year with the Sound Tigers. The Calder Cup 2002 Tour hits Utah today for a three-day visit that will culminate with a stop at the Grizzlies' game against Chicago on Friday night. The Cup, which has stood for AHL supremacy for 65 years, can be seen by fans at any of several stops around the Salt Lake area.
