
Aftershock blast Heatwave 172-74

Head Coach Andre Smith was happy to see his players under ABA game conditions, and the Aftershock players were happy to see an opponent in different jerseys after a month of conditioning and drills. The Aftershock prepared for its November 5th home opener with a 172-74 exhibition win over the undermanned Fresno Heatwave Sunday Night in Los Angeles.
Rock Lloyd and Darwin Carter got off the fast starts from the outside combining for 13 points, and Nick Sheppard dominated the middle as Los Angeles jumped out to a 28-19 early lead. Marcus Mason and Scott Freyond combined for nine points off the bench to give Los Angeles a 42-23 lead after one period.
The undermanned iron men from Fresno tried valiantly to stay close behind Sante "757" Gayles' 22 first half points, but he was the only Heatwave player to reach double digits until the final period. Carter and Lloyd combined for 30 first half points as the Aftershock cruised to a 76-42 half-time lead.
It was more of the same in the second half as Dion Bailey, Will Burr and Corey Williams did their share offensively. The trio combined for 20 points, which was three more than the entire Fresno team. LA lead after three periods 109-59. The final period was a barrage of open jumpers and lay-ups, as four Aftershock reserves went for double figures in the quarter. Scott Freymond, Kevin Richardson, Rambo Rasheed and Chip Conner combined for 50 fourth quarter points with Freymond highlighting things with two 4-point shots off steals for the Aftershock.
Freymond led 10 Aftershock players in double figures with 22, while Mason and Conner added 17 and 16 points in the win. Sheppard and Carter finished with 14 each. Gayle finished with 35 points in the road effort, while Roberto Young finished with 12 to round out the Heatwave players in double figures.
The Aftershock will play another tune up game in Maywood on Wednesday against the Aoshen Beijing National team before opening the regular season November 5 at 7pm at home at LA Southwest College.
