Amarillo Gorillas News Release

Amarillo, TX 11/6/08 - On October 29, Mike Gorman was claimed off waivers by Amarillo from Rio Grande Valley.

For over a week, Gorillas fans waited to see what would become of the acquisition. Thursday, the wait officially ended, as the CHL veteran signed with the Gorillas.

After seven seasons with the rival Odessa Jackalopes, Gorman will be suiting up for the Amarillo Gorillas in 2008-09, appearing in practice with the team Thursday. The signing solidifies Head Coach Tom Coolen's situation in net, which had been rocky since the season began in mid-October.

Gorman has played eight seasons in the WPHL/CHL, beginning in 2000-01 with the Lake Charles Ice Pirates. Following a 18-21-3 year with the now-defunct Ice Pirates, Gorman moved on to Odessa, where he most recently posted a 11-14-3 record last season. During his time as a professional, the Nepean, Ontario native has never posted a save percentage of lower than .900 or a goals-against average higher than 3.50.

The 28-year-old goaltender will join rookie Ryan Scott in between the pipes for the Gorillas. Scott has won his last two games, posting a save percentage of .931 and a goals-against average of under 1.70 during that span. Earlier in the week, Amarillo waived Pierre-Olivier Girouard, who played in one game with the team(a 6-3 loss to Arizona on October 31).

Coolen has yet to make a decision on who will be starting for the team Friday night, as the Gorillas take on Rapid City. Friday will be "Military Appreciation Night" at the Amarillo Civic Center, with special $9 tickets for those who show their U.S. Military I.D. at the box office. Non-military personnel can get $5 off their ticket by bringing five cans of food for the High Plains Food Bank to the Gorillas ticketing office (901 S. Buchanan in Amarillo) or to the Civic Center Box Office. Former Gorillas head coach (and current Rush head coach) Joe Ferras will be on hand in the 'Ape Escape' from 5:30 PM to 6:00 PM, meeting with fans-opening face-off for the game is scheduled for 7:05 PM.

Enjoy all the benefits of being an Amarillo Gorillas season ticket holder, including pregame meetings with Coach Coolen and one-of-a-kind access to special events! Gorillas season tickets for 2008-09 are available by calling (806) 242-PUCK (7825) or by visiting the Gorillas office at 901 Buchanan in Amarillo.
