AFL gets doubleheader on NBC this weekend
April 21, 2004 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Albany/Indiana Firebirds News Release
INDIANAPOLIS â The Arena Football League will have six straight hours of coverage this weekend on NBC. Beginning at 11:00 AM (CT), and running until the conclusion of the Firebirds game versus Arizona, which begins at 2:00 PM (CT), fans will have the opportunity to watch the first-ever AFL doubleheader this Sunday, April 25th.
The landmark event will feature a total of five games. Two games will be available for the first half of the doubleheader, Dallas at Orlando and San Jose at Georgia. AFL on NBC broadcasts are broken up regionally so half of the country will see one game and the rest will see the other game. San Jose (8-2) is currently one of the top two teams in the league, along with New Orleans (8-2), and Georgia will be looking for a win following the firing of head coach Marty Lowe earlier this week. Fans in Indianapolis will get to see the Dallas Desparados (6-4) face off against the surging Orlando Predators (5-5) in game one, followed by the Firebirds-Rattlers showdown.
Throughout the six hours, Al Trautwig and Glenn Parker will be in the studio in New York City, bringing you highlights from all the games, breaking down the AFL playoff picture and will also be joined by New York Dragons quarterback Aaron Garcia. Garcia threw his 600th career touchdown pass against the Colorado Crush last Sunday on NBC and has the Dragons (6-4) right in the middle of the playoff hunt.
The two games being shown in the second-half of the doubleheader, besides the Firebirds' game, feature two very interesting match-ups. Los Angeles Avengers (6-4), led by QB Tony Graziani (64 TD-1 INT), bring their squad to the windy city to take on the Central-Division leading Chicago Rush (7-3) and QB Raymond Philyaw. Chicago is currently one and one-half games ahead of Indiana with one meeting left between the two teams on May 23rd in Chi-town.
The final feature game pits two of the more surprising stories of the 2004 AFL season when the New Orleans VooDoo (8-2) go to the Lone Star State to battle the Austin Wranglers (6-4). The game brings together two teams that are having success in their first season in the league. This game could determine which team is the expansion team of the year, while it will also help the winner in their push towards the playoffs.
The Firebirds host the Arizona Rattlers on Sunday, April 25th at 2:00 PM (local Indiana time) in an AFL on NBC match-up. Besides watching the game LIVE on WTHR-TV locally, fans can listen to the game on ESPN 950AM, 95.9 WIJY FM, or via the internet broadcast at www.espn950.com. Firebirds' group tickets for the 2004 season are on sale now and can be purchased by calling a Firebirds' ticket representative at 317.472.8080.
