(SAN JOSE, CA) â Buffalo Destroyers K Steve McLaughlin was honored at the Arena Football League's ArenaBall awards reception Friday night at the Imperial Ballroom in San Jose's Fairmont Hotel as part of the league's ArenaBowl XVI festivities. McLaughlin was selected second team All-Arena for his performance in 2002. This is his first selection to the All-Arena team.
McLaughlin, who signed with Buffalo as a free agent in the off-season, set the Destroyers single season and career records for PAT's with 75 and PAT attempts with 79. He was second in the league converting 95% of his extra points. He tied for seventh with 14 field goals going 14-37 this season. He was seventh among kickers with 117 points.
McLaughlin, a five year AFL veteran, is one of the most accurate kickers in the history of the AFL. He holds the highest field goal percentage in league history at 51.6% (minimum of 75 kicks). He is sixth in league history in PAT's (335), PAT attempts (365) and field goals made (75). He is seventh all-time for scoring by a kicker with 557 career points. In 2001, McLaughlin led all-kickers with 152 points which was also ninth overall.
McLaughlin was a third round selection by the St. Louis Rams in 1995. He appeared in eight games for the Rams going 8-16 on field goals.
McLaughlin enjoyed a storied career at the University of Arizona where he won the prestigious Lou Groza award in 1994, given to the top kicker in college football. He was an AP All-American and All-PAC 10 his senior season. McLaughlin converted 23 of 29 field goal attempts in his career and never missed an extra point. He is Arizona's all-time leading scorer and was inducted into Arizona's Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.
Outside of pro football, McLaughlin fronts the rock band "Pet The Fish". His band has opened for the Dave Mathews band and been featured on the TV show "Party of Five".
