August 16, 2002 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. â Los Angeles Avengers wide receiver/linebacker GREG HOPKINS (6-2, 205, Slippery Rock) has been named the Arena Football League's Ironman of the Year. This is the first Ironman of the Year award for the seven-year veteran.
Hopkins led the Avengers in scoring (202 points), touchdowns (33), receptions (102) and receiving yards (1,285), ranking No. 3 in the AFL in all four of categories. Defensively, he made 38.5 tackles and intercepted five passes, returning three of them for scores. The Slippery Rock grad led the Avengers to an 8-6 record in 2002, which earned the club the No. 5 seed in the playoffs. His three interception returns for touchdowns not only led the league in 2002, but also upped his career total to eight, which is a new all-time AFL record.
No stranger to league honors this season, Hopkins earned weekly AFL awards four times this past season, winning "Ironman of the Week" three times and "Offensive Player of the Week" once. He also was named the "Ironman of the Month" after his performance during the month of June.
Other candidates for the Ironman of the Year included: Cory Fleming (Carolina), Mike Furrey (New York), Randy Gatewood (Arizona), Darryl Hammond (Georgia), Willis Marshall (Grand Rapids), Dameon Porter (Chicago), Travis Reece (Georgia), Lawrence Samuels (Tampa Bay), and Barry Wagner (San Jose).
