AFC Toronto Signs Local Defender Sonia Walk

Toronto, ON - AFC Toronto is thrilled to announce the signing of 22-year-old defender Sonia Walk from Boston College. The Torontonian returns home to not only be part of Northern Super League history but also continue her remarkable recovery story following two major surgeries.

A player with strong ties to the Canadian soccer scene, Walk is a North Toronto Soccer Club product. She later represented the National Development Centre (Ontario), Team Ontario, and multiple Canadian youth national teams. Her impressive career landed her a four-year full athletic scholarship at Boston College, where she proved a reliable and versatile talent.

Over four seasons at the NCAA Division I level, Walk played both defender and midfielder for the Eagles. She registered 61 appearances for Boston College in 68 matches, totalling 4,295 minutes played. However, hip surgery and an ACL tear in the same calendar year prompted Walk to put her career on hold. That was until she learned of the opportunity with AFC Toronto.

The conception of the NSL and a chance to be part of the city's first-ever professional women's soccer team prompted Walk to return home. What made the decision even easier was the potential of playing for head coach Marko Milanovic and sporting director Billy Wilson again. Under their guidance, Walk felt AFC Toronto was the club suited to help her continue her remarkable recovery story and career while making professional women's sports history.

"I know Marko and Billy very well, which played a big role in why I came back," said Walk. "After tearing my ACL, I wasn't sure what my next chapter was, but they are really encouraging in my return-to-play journey. Playing for them again and professionally in the city I grew up in is special. The Northern Super League offers new hope and opportunities for athletes like myself, and I didn't miss a beat signing my contract. It was an easy decision."

"Knowing Sonia as a player, but more importantly as an individual, made our scouting process seamless," said AFC Toronto Sporting Director Billy Wilson. "We knew from her youth career in Canada and experience at the NCAA Division I level with Boston College that her skills would be an asset to the club. And her determination is, too, given all she's done after two major operations. We are proud to offer another local player a chance to continue their professional career and are excited to see Sonia represent Toronto this season."

Additionally, Walk shared the pitch with a handful of AFC Toronto teammates thanks to her national team experience. She has represented the U-15, U-17, and U-20 sides in major competitions, including the U-17 and U-20 FIFA Women's World Cup. In preparation for joining AFC Toronto, she also served two seasons as North Toronto Soccer Club captain.

As the latest local player to sign for AFC Toronto, Walk joins a list of athletes eager to take their first steps onto BMO Field as a professional. The club begins its inaugural NSL season with a match against the Montreal Roses on April 19.

"I'm so excited to play at BMO Field for our home opener. I have memories of being a flag bearer for national team games when I was 10, and I was so proud to step on that field, even as a small part of a game day. The thought of now being a professional and playing on that field is something I never thought I'd be able to do."
