af2 Names Players of the Week

July 15, 2003 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - Greensboro quarterback CALEB SLOVER, wide receiver/defensive back BOBBY SIPPIO and Quad City defensive specialist ASA FRANCIS have been named Offensive Player, Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 16 of the 2003 season.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Slover (6-2, 205, Tusculum), in his second season, became the only player in af2 to hold responsibility for 10 touchdowns in a single game this season when he passed for nine and rushed for another in a 69-68 overtime win against the first-place Cape Fear Wildcats last Saturday. Stuck in a seesaw battle that saw five lead changes in the final quarter and overtime frame, Slover completed 21-of-30 passes for 321 yards and the nine touchdowns with no interceptions. Down by six points with less than seven minutes to play, Slover rushed for a 16-yard score to put his team up by one. Cape Fear regained the lead a short time later, but Slover struck back with a nine-yard touchdown pass to DAVID HILL with a minute to play, knotting the score at 62. In the extra session, Slover threw a 15-yard strike to ANDREW LAYTON and JAMES THOMAS' extra point sealed the win for Greensboro. This is Slover's first-ever weekly award.

IRONMAN OF THE WEEK Sippio (6-2, 215, Western Kentucky), a rookie, won an unprecedented third straight Ironman of the Week award for his efforts in the Prowlers overtime win against Cape Fear last Saturday. Sippio tallied six receptions for 110 yards and three touchdowns, which led his team, and he returned a missed field goal for 20 yards, five kickoffs for 80 yards and he gained nine more yards on an interception return. He also registered game-highs with nine tackles and three passes defended. Over the past three weeks, Sippio has totaled 18 receptions for 340 yards with 14 touchdowns, and he has nabbed three interceptions and 20.5 tackles. Sippio, who is making a strong case for Ironman of the Year, is the first player to win the weekly honor four times in a single season and the first to be awarded a weekly accolade three consecutive weeks.

ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Francis (6-3, 225, New Mexico Military), in his first season, regained a share of the overall lead in sacks for the season when he posted two against the visiting San Diego Riptide last Saturday night. In the 69-36 win, Francis recorded his 10.5 and 11.5 sacks of the season, matching Mohegan's CHARLIE COOK for the league lead. Francis also recorded 4.5 tackles and three tackles for a loss of 11 yards as he helped the Steamwheelers quiet the 'Tide. This is Francis' second ADT Defensive Player of the Week honor this season.
