Houston Aeros News Release
Houston, TX â The Minnesota Wild has assigned 18-year-old right wing Brent Burns, the team's first-round (No. 20 overall) draft pick in 2003, to the American Hockey League's Houston Aeros for a conditioning assignment, the teams announced Thursday. Burns will wear No. 36 and is expected to join the Aeros on the road in Milwaukee today.
Burns (3/9/85) has appeared in 21 games with the Wild, registering five points (1+4=5) and eight penalty minutes. The Ajax, Ont., native scored a goal in his third NHL game, October 12 in San Jose. The Wild loaned Burns (6-foot-3, 210 pounds) to Team Canada for the World Junior Championships in Finland, and he recorded six assists in six games to help the squad to a Silver Medal. Since returning from the WJC's, Burns has played in six games since January 12. He last saw action January 31 against Columbus. Burns is the third Minnesota player to jump straight to the Wild the same year he was drafted, joining Marian Gaborik and Pierre-Marc Bouchard.
Burns will become the 12th first-round draft pick to appear in a game with the Aeros, joining teammate Jason Marshall, who was selected ninth overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 1989 Draft. Burns and Marshall are the lone first-rounders to play for Houston since it joined the AHL in 2001-02. The last first-round draft picks to suit up for the Aeros prior to this season were Tom Chorske, Nick Stajduhar, David Wilkie and Zarley Zalapski, all in 2000-01. The highest ever draft pick to play for the Aeros was Sylvain Turgeon, who was with the team in 1995-96 and was the No. 2 overall pick by Hartford in 1983.
The Aeros wrap up a four-game road trip tonight and then Friday (San Antonio) before returning to Houston for a five-game homestand beginning Saturday against San Antonio at 7 p.m. The first 3,000 fans will receive hockey puck bottle openers. Call 713.974.PUCK for more information.
