Admirals Finally Defeat Phantoms in Series Finale

Rookie goalie from Denmark Frederik Andersen turned aside 32 consecutive Phantoms' shots on his way to his second career shutout as the Norfolk Admirals defeated Adirondack 3-0 on Wednesday night at Scope Arena.

Norfolk pulled off the victory in the last meeting of the season between the two teams as Adirondack fell just shy of sweeping the regular-season series over the Anaheim Ducks affiliate. The Phantoms won the series over Norfolk 3-1.

It's the first time Adirondack has been shutout in almost a month. The game was the sixth out of seven straight on the road for the Phantoms who make a long bus-ride overnight back to Glens Falls after this one as they prepare for their road-trip finale on Saturday at Connecticut. The Phantoms are 2-3-1 on the road-trip so far with one game remaining.

Adirondack trailed 2-0 in the third period and were continuing to get their attack going at Andersen. On a rebound in front, Marcel Noebels somehow barely missed an open net with a chip upstairs. And just a couple seconds later Jason Akeson was able to beat Andersen on his big blast from the left circle but it rang off the iron behind Andersen's right shoulder and stayed out.

Patrick Maroon had a pair of solid assists against his former team to help the Admirals attack.

Veteran Kyle Wilson's seventh goal of the year would come six minutes into the game off a couple of rebounds in the Adirondack zone. And Devante Smith-Pelley snuck one past Munroe for his ninth of the year after a strong centering-pass from the end-boards by Maroon.

Norfolk had the early advantage in the game and out-shot the Phantoms 21-8 in the first period but Adirondack was able to stay close.

The Phantoms had three power plays in the second period as they were able to turn things around and try to gain some momentum. But Adirondack was not able to capitalize on their opportunities.

After the narrow misses by Adirondack on their third-period power play, Norfolk was able to salt the game away with a late third-period tally by rookie Sami Vatanen from the right-ring on another assist by Maroon for the 3-0 final.

Norfolk out-shot the Phantoms in the game 48-31. It's the second-most shots allowed in a game by Adirondack this year and the most since October 27, 2012 when they surrendered 51 shots on goal against Rochester.

The Phantoms were 0-for-4 on the power play while the Admirals finished 0-for-6.

Brandon Manning missed his second straight game with a lower-body injury. Jon Sim was a healthy scratch and was replaced in the lineup by David Laliberte. Other scratches included Derek Mathers, who just joined the team last night from Peterborough of the OHL, as well as Ian Slater and Jeff Dimmen.

Adirondack travels to Hartford for a Saturday night game against the Whale to complete their 7-game roadie in which they logged over 2,200 miles. The Phantoms play their first home game in 15 days this Sunday afternoon at 3:00 against the Portland Pirates on a Sunday Family 3-Pack Game ($43 for 3 tickets, 3 hot dogs, 3 sodas, 1 large popcorn, 1 program).
