TAMPA, Fla. - Chance Adams combined with three relief pitchers for a shutout as the Tampa Yankees (17-12) defeated the Clearwater Threshers (19-10), 4-0, on Saturday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Adams (2-0) tallied a career-high eight strikeouts. The right-hander scattered three hits and a walk in a career-high six innings pitched. Adams tossed 56 of his 85 pitches for strikes.
Jorge Mateo jumpstarted the T-Yanks by hitting an inside-the-park home run on Kentucky Derby day. Mateo pulled a line drive into left and came all the way around to score as the ball rattled around in the corner, giving Tampa a 1-0 lead in the first.
Michael Mariot (0-1) retired six consecutive batters following the Mateo home run. The right-hander allowed one run on one hit in two innings, striking out three in his third Major League Rehab appearance with the Threshers.
An error by Clearwater second baseman Scott Kingery allowed Vicente Conde to reach in the third. A second error by Kingery allowed Conde to take second as Jake Skole reached on a fielder's choice. Conde tagged to third on a deep fly out to center by Mateo and Austin Aune followed with a sacrifice fly, giving Tampa a 2-0 lead.
Conde hit a leadoff single in the fifth and scored on Mateo's fifth triple of the season. A wild pitch by LHP Elniery Garcia allowed Mateo to score the final Yankee run.
RHP Philip Walby worked around a hit and a walk and struck out one batter in the seventh. LHP Caleb Frare picked up a strikeout in a 1-2-3 eighth. LHP James Reeves allowed a hit and struck out a pair in a scoreless ninth.
Mateo (3-for-4, HR, 3B, 2 RBI, 2 R) recorded his fourth consecutive multi-hit game and his fifth three-hit game of the season. Conde (1-for-3, 2 R) tallied multiple runs scored in a game for the first time this season.
Following a league-wide off day on Mother's Day, the Tampa Yankees will host the Lakeland Flying Tigers (16-13) on Monday at 7:00 p.m. LHP Josh Rogers (0-0, 1.29 ERA) is scheduled to start for Tampa. RHP Jeff Thompson (1-0, 0.52 ERA) is slated to take the mound for Lakeland.
