San Diego Gulls News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska -The San Diego Gulls were 4.8 seconds away from winning their seventh straight, but Ryan Moren's second goal of the game tied it and Valdemar Pelikovsky's goal in the sixth round of the shootout won it.
The Gulls (39-18-4) had three one-goal leads in the game, but the Aces (19-41-3) came back every time and with their last second heroics, shock San Diego 4-3, much to delight of 4,289 at Sullivan Arena. With the overtime setback, the Blue and Orange now lead the Bakersfield Condors by three points.
Things started out well for the Gulls, as they lit the lamp first with a power-play goal 1:13 into to the opening frame. Sylvain Deschatelets won a faceoff deep in the Aces zone, skated in front of the net and tipped in Trevor Sherban's shot from the blue line for his 20th marker on the year.
Anchorage tied it up at 8:54 on a goal by Ryan Moren, also on the man advantage. Yvan Corbin took a pass from Dean Larson and found Moren, who's one-timer from the point deflected off R.J. Enga and past Trevor Koenig.
Bruce Watson, who was claimed off waivers and arrived at Sullivan Arena about one hour before game time, regained San Diego's lead at 14:42 of the first. Clayton Read fed Enga, whose ensuing shot was saved by Ryan Person. Watson though was right there to pick up the garbage and pot his first goal in a Gulls uniform.
Tim Donnelly evened the game, 2-2, with his third goal just 1:17 into the second period. Koenig went to play the puck behind the net, but ran into Clayton Read.
Carl Drakensjo picked up the loose puck and fed it to Donnelly, who had an empty net staring him right in the face.
San Diego took its third lead of the game, thanks to Jamie Black's fourth tally at 7:44 of the second. Black took a pass from newcomer Jamie Miller, skated to the right circle and fired home a low wrist shot past a screened Person. Watson also earned an assist for his second point of the night.
The Aces had a golden opportunity in the first half of the third period to knot the contest again. Anchorage had three straight power plays, including a five-minute major, but couldn't muster one in. But just when you thought the game was over, Moren sent the game to a shootout with his second goal of the game - fifth of the season - with just 4.8 seconds left in regulation after a wild scramble in front of the net.
In the shootout, Anchorage got goals from Yvan Corbin and Pelikovsky. The only Gull to beat Person in the extra frame was Dennis Purdie.
