Alexandria Aces News Release
ALEXANDRIA- Corey Frerichs threw his first professional shutout while Jon Dziomba and Dan Evatt hit home runs to give the San Angelo Colts a 3-0 victory against the Alexandria Aces in the first game of a doubleheader at Bringhurst Field.
Frerichs (4-1), who had pitched almost exclusively out of the bullpen during his five year career in the Milwaukee Brewers organization, held the Aces to only four hits in a seven inning complete game that tied him with Fort Worth's Eric Sheridan for the league lead with four victories.
"I'm enjoying starting. I get to set up hitters for the next time around. As a reliever I couldn't do that," said Frerichs, who changed speeds to strike out four hitters and walk only one.
Dziomba's home run to right center that led off the fourth inning was his first of the season and came off Dan Schmidt (3-1), who pitched his second straight complete game and also allowed only four hits in the game while walking two and fanning eight.
Evatt's 2-run homer came four batters later and was over the fence in left center.
GAME TWO
Eddie Murray and Chad Bunting's 3-run doubles highlighted an 8-run second inning to give the Aces a 9-2 victory and split in their doubleheader against the San Angelo Colts at Bringhurst Field on Tuesday night.
Michael Haynes' bases loaded single off Russell Johns (0-1), making his first start of the season, brought home Bunting with the first run of the big inning to make Nathan Stewart (2-1) the winning pitcher.
Stewart, who came on in relief of lefthander Mike Loseke in the second inning, threw two scoreless innings.
Ryan Waters was activated before the game and threw his best game of the year. The LSU-Alexandria product allowed only one hit in three scoreless innings of relief while striking out two hitters.
Alexandria's Zack Cadet hit his second homer of the year off Steve Merslich in the fourth inning, and the Colts' (17-15) Jon Dziomba's second homer of the doubleheader and year came off Gabe Grammer in the seventh.
The Aces (16-16) now go on an eight game road trip, first to Edinburg for four games against the Roadrunners and then Fort Worth for a quintet with the Cats. First pitch at Edinburg Baseball Stadium tomorrow is at 7:05 p.m. CDT.
