Alexandria Aces News Release

Alexandria, LA; May 30, 2006 - Keto Anderson's single scored Erick Mejias from third base with the game-winning run as the Alexandria Aces rallied from a 2-1 ninth-inning deficit to beat the Laredo Broncos 3-2 Tuesday night at Bringhurst Field.

The Aces, who lost to Laredo in the bottom of the ninth Sunday, had two outs and nobody on base in the ninth when the rally started. Catcher Kevin Griffin, a defensive replacement, singled to right field against Laredo closer John Smith (1-1). Mejias followed with a walk, bringing up new signing Cleatus Davidson. In his first game with the Aces, Davidson blooped a hit down the left-field line that fell just out of the reach of shortstop Dalphi Correa, scoring Griffin with the tying run. Anderson then came up and lined a 2-2 pitch through the middle for the game-winning hit, simultaneously extending his hitting streak to 12 games.

Anderson also started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. He led off with a walk, stole second base, and eventually scored on a Josh Tranum groundout. Aces righthander Fontella Jones worked seven strong innings but surrendered the lead in the fifth inning when Bronco catcher Jose Salas hit a two-run homer to right field, one of just four hits against the Aces.

Alexandria banged out 11 hits but could not score, thanks to stellar Laredo defense. Rightfielder Chris Judkins made three outstanding defensive plays but was injured when he crashed into the right-field wall to rob Richard Paz (2-for-3) of an extra-base hit. Laredo starter Byron Batson scattered seven hits over seven innings but got a no decision. Aces reliever Jermaine Shack (1-0) earned the win with two innings of shutout relief. Luis Espinosa also had two hits for the Aces.

The teams return to Bringhurst Field Wednesday morning at 10:35 a.m. for the first City of Alexandria Kids' Day of the season. The series concludes Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
