Aces lose shootout, 2-1

Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – In perhaps the most exciting WCHL game to date this season, the San Diego Gulls emerged with a 2-1 shootout victory over the Anchorage Aces Saturday in front of 3,079 at Sullivan Arena.

End-to-end action and quality scoring chance on both sides marked a scoreless first period. Dean Larson finally snapped the deadlock with a redirection of a Jiri Jakes centering pass at 10:18 of the middle frame. But late in the second period, San Diego's Clayton Read banged home a loose puck in front for the equalizer with 16.3 seconds showing on the clock. Read's second goal of the series against his former team set the stage for a third period where the Gulls had the attacking zone time advantage but failed to solve Aces' netminder Christian Soucy. Anchorage erased nine San Diego power plays, including a five-on-three advantage with nine minutes left in regulation. Soucy finished with 25 saves as the Gulls outshot the Aces 26-18 over 60 minutes but were pushed into a shootout.

Having gone winless in nine shootouts during the 2001-02 campaign, Anchorage (2-10-1) would fare no better this time around, as Larson, B.J. Young, J.J. Wrobel, and Yvan Corbin were turned aside in succession by San Diego goaltender Trevor Koenig. Mark Pederson and Sylvain Deschatelets converted for the Gulls, who ran their record to 7-6-1 with the victory.

The Aces and Gulls will wrap up their three-game series tomorrow at Sullivan Arena with a 5:00 p.m. start and a "Postgame Skate with the Aces." All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com or www.kfqd.com with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
