November 17, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â Christian Soucy had 30 saves and Dean Larson scored twice as Anchorage picked up its first home win of the season by a count of 5-1 over San Diego Sunday at Sullivan Arena.
The Aces took advantage of an apparently flat first period from the Gulls, grabbing the lead at 5:17 on Carl Drakensjo's fourth goal of the year, from Larson and Yvan Corbin. Anchorage went up by two goal for the first time this season ten minutes later as Gregg Zaporzan banked a shot off the back of San Diego defenseman Jamie Black for his first professional goal. The Aces maintained that 2-0 edge into the first intermission, marking the first time all year that the club held the lead after the opening 20 minutes.
The Gulls came roaring back in the second period, scoring just 41 seconds into the frame courtesy of Sandro Sbrocca. But though San Diego outshot Anchorage 16-4 during the middle period, the Aces maintained their two-goal margin thanks to Larson, who beat Gulls' netminder Curtis Cruickshank five-hole at the 16:57 mark.
Anchorage increased the margin to 4-1 midway through the third period on a power play goal by Don Martin, who ripped a one-timer past Cruickshank after a beautiful feed from J.J. Wrobel. San Diego pulled Cruickshank in the midst of a power play opportunity later in the period in a desperate attempt to get back in the game, but B.J. Young picked up a rebound in his own zone and found Larson streaking up ice for an empty-netter with 6:34 remaining that salted away Anchorage's first home win since March 27.
The Aces, who improved their record to 3-10-1, take Monday off before welcoming Long Beach (6-4) to Sullivan Arena for Tuesday and Wednesday night games at 7:00 p.m. The Ice Dogs swept Anchorage in a three-game series at Long Beach Arena three weeks ago. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com or www.kfqd.com with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
