San Diego Gulls News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The Anchorage Aces scored four unanswered goals and salvaged the final game of the weekend series with a 5-1 win over the San Diego Gulls Sunday night, before 1,930 at Sullivan Arena. San Diego remains in third place in the West Coast Hockey League.
The Aces (3-10-1), who recorded their first home win tonight, dominated the opening frame and got rewarded with a 2-0 lead. Carl Drakensjo got things started for Anchorage, netting his fourth goal at 5:17. Drakensjo took a feed from Dean Larson and deflected a backhander past Curtis Cruickshank. Yvan Corbin earned the second assist. Then a lucky bounce gave the Aces a two-goal cushion at 15:19. Gregg Zaporzan, stationed behind the net, centered a pass that caromed off the Gulls' Jamie Black into the net. J.J. Wrobel got the lone assist on Zaporzan's first tally of the season.
San Diego (7-7-1) cut the lead in half just 41 seconds into the second period on Sandro Sbrocca's third goal. Clayton Read skated out of the corner and found an open Sbrocca, who tucked in a shot behind Christian Soucy. Sylvain Deschatelets notched the other helper. Anchorage regained its two-goal lead at 16:57 on Larson's first goal of the game. Corbin and Drakensjo recorded their second points of the game with the assists.
Don Martin netted his fourth goal on an Anchorage power play midway through the third period to seal its victory. Wrobel registered the only assist, his second of the game. Head coach Steve Martinson gambled with the Gulls on a power play minutes later by pulling Cruickshank, but got burned. Larson, who just came out of the penalty box, received a pass from B.J. Young and scored the empty-netter for his second goal of the night - eighth of the season.
