Alexandria Aces News Release

Edinburg, TX; June 7, 2006 - Despite rallying from a six-run first-inning deficit, the Alexandria Aces fell 8-6 to the Edinburg Coyotes Wednesday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

In the eighth, Edinburg's Garvi Arias led off with a single through the right side against losing pitcher Brian Martin (1-4), who was in his third inning of relief. Evan Cherry then laid down a bunt, but Kevin Griffin's throw to second base sailed into center field, allowing both runners to move up a base. Lorenzo Grijalva followed with a two-run triple to deep right field.

The Aces got stellar relief pitching, as Adam Cox, Lazaro Pineiro, Martin, and Curt Borland combined to give up just four hits in 8.2 innings of relief. Cox, Pineiro, and Martin held Edinburg hitless for 22 batters between the first and seventh innings. Alexandria starter Donnie Bridges struggled with control in the first inning, walking three batters and hitting two, as Edinburg took a 6-0 lead on run-scoring singles by Robinson Cancel, Eli Albertson, and Cherry.

The Aces fought their way back into the game gradually, scoring once in the second inning and twice each in the fourth and sixth innings before finally tying the score in the seventh. Adam Bonner, Luis Guance, and Erick Mejias were the offensive catalysts. Guance was 3-for-5 with two doubles. Mejias drove in two runs in the fourth inning with a single, as did catcher Kevin Griffin in the sixth. Bonner was on base in the middle of three rallies, stealing a base and scoring the tying run in the seventh inning. The Aces had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the eighth inning but failed to break the 6-6 tie. Edinburg then scored two in the bottom to earn the win for reliever Julio Castro (3-0), and Edwar Ramirez earned his ninth save of the year.

The series concludes tomorrow night, with Alexandria's Santo Hernandez facing Edinburg's Julio Ruiz. The Aces return home to Bringhurst Field June 13. For more information, log on to www.myacesbaseball.com or call 473-ACES.
