Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Reno, NV - The Tacoma Rainiers (35-47) dropped a second straight to the Reno Aces (43-40) on Saturday night, and after winning the first three games of this weeklong set, will try a third time for a series win on Sunday. The Rainiers are 6-5 at Reno this season (8-9 overall), and were out-hit 11-6 on Saturday.
Tacoma struck first in the third inning after Mason McCoy gapped a triple to right field, and later scored on a Drew Ellis sac fly. It was 3-0 Rainiers in the fifth when Jarred Kelenic stroked Tacoma's second triple of the evening, also into the gap in right, scoring both Trey Amburgey (single) and McCoy (single). Kelenic has six extra-base hits in four games played during this series (2 HR, 2 3B, 2 2B). The Rainiers made it 4-0 before the fifth was over, when Kelenic scored from third on a dropped pop fly (error by 2B Yonny Hernandez).
Of Kelenic's 51 hits for Tacoma this season since being optioned on May 13 (.300 AVG), 29 have gone for extra bases, a staggering 57% of his Triple-A hit total this season (.606 SLG in 40 GP).
Rainiers starter Justus Sheffield retired the first nine batters he faced, en route to an appearance of 4.2 IP; things fell apart in a six-run Reno fifth. In a six-hit frame, a two-run Wilmer Difo double and a two-run Stone Garrett homer - his PCL leading 21st of the season - did most of the damage. Sheffield walked two and struck out two amidst his hot start to the game.
What began as a low-scoring affair continued to get weird in the sixth, when the Rainiers scored twice to tie it 6-6, despite only one hit. Kelenic and Ellis each drew a walk with the bases loaded to even the score. Aces starter Ryne Nelson walked three and allowed six hits, and five of the six runs against him were earned over 5.2 IP (3 K).
Reno immediately got two back in the seventh, in similar fashion. Seth Beer drove in a run on a bases loaded single, and Jake Hager walked to force in another, making the score 8-6 which would hold up.
The series finale will be at 6:05 PT on Sunday at Greater Nevada Field. RHP Konner Wade (Tacoma) and LHP Tommy Henry (Reno) are scheduled to finish the week on the hill.
