Aces Harris, Reid-Foley Headline Lugnuts Roster
April 4, 2016 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - Top pitching prospects Jon Harris and Sean Reid-Foley headline the Lansing Lugnuts' 2016 Opening Day roster, released in conjunction with the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday morning.
The Lugnuts host the Michigan State Spartans at Cooley Law School Stadium on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. in the tenth annual Crosstown Showdown presented by Auto-Owners Insurance, and then officially raise the curtain on their 21st season in Mid Michigan at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday against the Great Lakes Loons.
First-year manager John Schneider's roster features six of MLB Pipeline's Top 30 Blue Jays prospects. The highest regarded is Harris, ranking No. 3 and entering his first full season after getting drafted 29th overall in 2015. Reid-Foley comes in next at No. 4, riding the confidence of an overpowering campaign in which he struck out 90 Midwest League hitters in only 63 1/3 innings.
Other ballyhooed players include 6'6 starter Angel Perdomo (#23), slugging infielder Carl Wise (#25), toolsy outfielder Lane Thomas (#29) and shutdown reliever Travis Bergen (#30). Catcher Max Pentecost (#7), drafted in the 2014 first round, opens the season on the 7-day Disabled List.
Reid-Foley and Thomas are among 11 returning Lugnuts, joining pitchers Conor Fisk, Dusty Isaacs, Starlyn Suriel and Colton Turner; catcher Justin Atkinson; infielders Gunnar Heidt and Juan Kelly; and outfielders Josh Almonte and Austin Davis (who will open the season on the DL).
The Lugs will fill out their starting rotation with hard-throwing Francisco Rios, Ryan Cook and Tayler Saucedo, adding newcomers Josh DeGraaf and Dan Lietz to the bullpen.
Ryan Hissey, a two-time nominee for the Johnny Bench Award, will split catching duties with Atkinson. Aaron Attaway and switch-hitting J.C. Cardenas fill out the rest of the infield; powerful Torontonian Connor Panas will provide a big bat between first base and the outfield; and Jacob Anderson and Andrew Guillotte will step in beside Almonte and Thomas to roam the large dimensions of Jackson Field. Right fielder Anderson is a particularly interesting candidate; drafted 35th overall in 2011, injuries have severely limited his playing time during the last three seasons.
