Brooklyn Aces News Release
Tonight at the Aviator Arena in Brooklyn, the Aces overcame a 2-1 third period deficit and beat the visiting Jersey Rockhoppers 4-2 in front of a rauchous crowd. Montreal Canadiens Assistant Captain Chris Higgins was on hand to drop the ceremonial first puck along with several kids from PS-114. Brooklyn was propelled by CJ Tozzo's hat trick, but it took a total team effort to win Saturday's game.
Jersey got on the board first when Anthony Becker fell in front of the net and poked the puck past goalie Miroslav Recicar. But Tozzo evened the score at 1-1 on a pass from newcomer Derek Kern. The Rockhoppers took the lead again on a Rich Jondo powerplay slapshot that banked off of the post and into the net. Jersey took a 2-1 lead into the third period. Coming into tonight's game, the Rockhoppers were 10-0 when leading after the second period.
"We killed off a few penalties late in the second," said Tozzo. "And we were trying to build on that going into the third period. And build they did. Tozzo came out and scored the game-tying goal just 55 seconds into the final frame. Just a few minutes later CJ assisted on Eric Frank's short-handed goal to put the Aces in the lead. "We got a 3-on-2 break coming out of the zone, and Jesse (Felten) found me with the puck. I was able to push the defender deep into the zone and when I got the puck to Frank he had a clear shot at the net." Miroslav Recicar made sure that 3 goals was all they would need. Miro stopped 29-of-31 Jersey shot attempts to improve to 13-0 on the year.
The Aces are back in action tomorrow for the first-half of a home-and-home series with the Danbury Mad Hatters. Saturday's game is in Danbury at 7:30pm, with the rematch on Sunday afternoon at 2:00pm at the Aviator Arena in Brooklyn.
