Aces Win In OT -- Take 1-0 Series Lead

March 26, 2009 - Eastern Professional Hockey League (EPHL)
Brooklyn Aces News Release

Thursday night at the Aviator Arena in Brooklyn, NY the Brooklyn Aces and Jersey Rockhoppers faced-off in Game 1 of the EPHL Championship Series. The two battled to the end of regulation and into overtime before the Aces emerged victorious 3-2. The Rockhoppers drew first blood midway through the first period when Matt Puntureri slid a pass to Drew Sanders in the slot for the game's first goal. Brooklyn answered back later in the first when EPHL Rookie of the Year CJ Tozzo ripped a slapshot from the top of the left circle beating Nick Niedert on the glove side, tying the game at 1-1. The second period was a display of great goaltending by both Niedert and Aces goalie Eddie Neville, who was playing for the first time since injuring his neck just two weeks ago.

After a scoreless second period, Jersey took a quick lead to start the third when Chris Ferazzoli beat Neville on the short side just 16 seconds into the period. Brooklyn was then able to take advantage of an Anthony Becker interference penalty a few minutes later as Jesse Felten put in a rebound to tie the game at two goals apiece. With the game tied and less than 10 seconds left, Jersey took control of the puck and skated down the ice with a 2-on-1 advantage. Becker made a cross ice pass just in front of the net to teammate Tom Boudreau who fired a shot on net and what looked to be a sure goal, but Neville pushed across the crease, making a spectacular save with less than three seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.

Last Saturday, Jersey beat the Aces in OT at the Aviator Arena to clinch their spot in the EPHL finals. Tonight it was Brooklyn's turn. 4 minutes and 26 seconds into overtime, Jesse Felten hit Andrew Scampoli who flipped a wrister past Niedert, sending the hometown crowd into a frenzy and giving the Aces a 1-0 lead in the Best-of-Three Championship Series.

Game 2 of the Championship Series will be on Friday March 27th at the Aviator Arena at 7:30pm. To order tickets visit www.BrooklynAces.com or call 732-267-7340
