Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Waterloo Black Hawks pushed the puck over the Madison Capitols' goal line moments after the final horn had sounded, too late to alter a 5-4 deficit Wednesday during the closing game of the USHL Fall Classic East at the Resch Center in Green Bay.
The Capitols had scored the game-winning goal seven minutes earlier when Marco Richter was setup behind the Waterloo net and found Michael Merulla at the top of the crease for a one-touch redirection.
Waterloo had stacked up a healthy 19-6 advantage in scoring opportunities during the first period, but each side scored just once before going to the locker room. Nick Olczyk and Rem Pitlick sprang George Mika for a breakaway goal; the Florida native finished his chance with a backhander over the shoulder of goaltender Darren Smith at 12:30. The Capitols tied the matchup just less than four minutes later. With Ryan Lohin's initial shot trickling toward the goal line after a partial save, Will Johnson slammed the disk to the back of the net at 16:30.
Both teams enjoyed the lead during the second period, but the frame ended in deadlock. Just 40 seconds after intermission, Johnson fired a low shot into the net to cap a breakaway. Larry Jungwirth evened the count, scoring on the rebound of a Phil Beaulieu opportunity at 7:37. Then shortly after a Madison power play ended, the Hawks went to the lead on an shot from close range by Tyler Sheehy. Less than a minute later, Haralds Egle equalized when he banked a puck into the net off the skate of a Waterloo defender.
The Hawks took their final lead of the contest 48 seconds into the third when Tyson McLellan redirected a shot from just outside the blue paint. The 4-3 margin only held until 5:02 when Chong Hyun Lee maneuvered around a defender to fire a wrister to the top corner in transition.
Waterloo's exhibition schedule concludes this weekend with a home-and-home series against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders beginning at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena Friday. Tickets for Saturday's 7:05 contest ay Young Arena, as well are all regular season games, are on sale from waterlooblackhawks.com or by calling the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
