Madison Capitols News Release
Madison, WI - The Madison Capitols came back from deficits of 1-0, 3-2, and 4-3 to defeat the Waterloo Black Hawks, 5-4, at the Resch Center on Wednesday. Madison finishes the Fall Classic with a 2-0 record.
The Black Hawks struck first and ended the shutout streak of Madison goaltender Darren Smith at 12:38 of the first period as George Mika broke in alone and beat Smith on the backhand.
Despite being outshot 19-6 in the opening period, the Capitols responded just less than four minutes later, as Will Johnson located a puck in the blue paint that squeezed between the wickets of goaltender Kris Carlson.
The second period brought a more sustained back-and-forth offensive rhythm. The Capitols struck first as Johnson found himself alone on a breakaway pass from Ryan Lohin to give Madison a 2-1 lead at just the 40-second mark.
Waterloo answered back twice with goals separated by less than four minutes: one from Larry Jungwirth and the other from Tyler Sheehy respectively at 7:37 and 11:23.
Despite falling behind, the Capitols battled back and deadlocked the score, 3-3, as Haralds Egle banked the puck in off a Waterloo defender from the left side corner at 12:17.
Waterloo again regained the lead early in the third on a re-direction goal by Tyson McClellan just 48 seconds into the final frame.
Chong-Hyun Lee answered for the Capitols, though, as the first Korean to ever play in the USHL toe dragged the puck beautifully around a Waterloo defender on the left wing before forehanding the puck into the top shelf to tie the game, 4-4, at 5:04. Just over seven minutes later, Michael Merulla tallied the game winner off a beautiful no-look, backhanded pass from Marco Richter behind the Waterloo net.
The Capitols complete their preseason slate with a game at Capitol Ice Arena in Middleton on Saturday against the Chicago Steel. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. Admission is free and $1 beers will be served between 5:30 and 7 p.m.
