Cubs and Yankees Split Doubleheader

The Daytona Cubs (7-7) mustered enough offense to defeat the Tampa Yankees (6-5), 2-0 in the first game of two from George M. Steinbrenner Field.

The Cubs cracked the scoreboard first in the top of the fourth inning off Yankee starter D.J. Mitchell (3-5). Starlin Castro reached on a fielder's choice and stole second before Mitchell issued a walk to Jake Opitz. With two away in the inning, Robinson Chirinos singled up the middle to score Castro and give the Cubs a 1-0 lead.

That would be plenty for Cubs starter James Leverton (6-8). Leverton pitched 5 2/3 innings and held the Yankees scoreless with the help of four double-play balls off the Yankees' bats.

The Cubs would pick up an insurance run in the seventh off of Yankee reliever Tim Norton. Josh Vitters led of the seventh with a base hit to right field and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Marwin Gonzalez. With two away, Norton threw a wild pitch that allowed Vitters to advance to third but an errant throw from Yankee catcher Austin Romine to third allowed Vitters to score on the play.

David Cales picked up his eleventh save on the year after he pitched a perfect 1 1/3 innings to close out the game. Game two was another pitcher's duel as Tampa (7-5) used a masterful pitching performance from Ryan Zink (5-8) to down the Cubs (7-8), 2-1. Zink spun six innings of one hit, scoreless baseball for the Yankees. The win snapped a two game losing skid for the University of Illinois-Chicago product.

The Tampa Yankees did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard. Right fielder Daniel Brewer tripled to start off the bottom of the first inning. He was promptly driven in by Jack Rye, who doubled into the gap in left-center. Designated hitter Austin Romine followed with a single to score Rye and give the Yankees a 2-0 lead.

The Cubs got on the board with one run in the top of the seventh inning off of Tampa closer Jonathan Hovis. Right fielder Brandon Guyer doubled to center field and moved to third on an error by Damon Sublett in center. Vitters brought Guyer in with a ground out to third. Daytona had a chance to tie it as Jonathan Wyatt singled up the middle with Gonzalez at second, but the Cubs shortstop was gunned down at the plate by Sublett to end the game.

The Cubs return home now for three games against the Clearwater Threshers starting Saturday night at 7:05.
