San Jose Earthquakes News Release


The San Jose Earthquakes are back in the Bay Area after spending the last week in Los Angeles. The team had a pair of exhibition games down south against the Colorado Rapids and Chivas USA. The Quakes will play their final preseason game at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara on Saturday, March 14 against the Portland Timbers of the USL First Division. The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. PT.

Misc. Notes

Bobby Convey Now Training with the Quakes

Midfielder Bobby Convey joined the Quakes on their trip to Los Angeles last week and is now training with the team in the Bay Area. He made his first preseason appearance with the squad against Chivas USA, coming on as a substitute for Arturo Alvarez in the 68th minute of the 1-0 victory. Convey signed with San Jose on February 10 after his time abroad with Reading F.C. in England.

Jason Hernandez Signs a New Deal with Quakes

Defender Jason Hernandez signed a new multi-year contract recently with the San Jose Earthquakes. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Hernandez was drafted by San Jose in the 2007 expansion draft and started a career-high 28 matches last season. He also earned Earthquakes Defensive Player of the Year honors for his performances on the backline in 2008.

Gold Cup Coming to the Bay Area July 5, 2009

Oakland was announced as one of 13 cities that will be hosting CONCACAF Gold Cup matches for this summer's tournament. A doubleheader will be held at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on Sunday, July 5. The countries playing at the Coliseum have yet to be released. The tournament will run from July 3-July 26 and feature the national teams of the United States, Mexico, Canada and Costa Rica as well as eight other national teams from the CONCACAF region.

Quakes Segment on KNBR 1050

The Earthquakes weekly five-minute news report will make its debut on KNBR 1050 this week. The segment, which runs throughout the MLS season, will air Thursday, March 12 at 7 p.m. PT on KNBR 1050. John Shrader, the voice of the Earthquakes, will host the report that will include interviews, player features and team news. The segment will air every Friday on KNBR 1050 following the Razor and Mr. T show at 7 p.m. PT, except the next two weeks when the report will air on Thursday nights.

Earthquakes to Host Portland Timbers at Buck Shaw Stadium

The Earthquakes will play their last preseason game at Buck Shaw Stadium when they face the Portland Timbers of the USL First Division Saturday, March 14 at 7:30 pm PT. Season ticket holders can attend this match free of charge. Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased by calling 1-800-225-2277 or online at sjearthquakes.com. All tickets are general admission and the ticket price for non-season ticket holders is $10.

Quakes to Make First Stop of Amway Global Kicks for Kids Program on March 18

On Wednesday, March 18, the San Jose Earthquakes and Amway Global Kicks for Kids program will make its first appearance at Bachrodt Elementary School in San Jose. Nick Garcia will appear at the school to speak to the children and give away tickets and t-shirts. Every week leading up to a home game, an Earthquakes player will appear at a local school, community center or summer program to discuss the importance and benefits of living a healthy lifestyle. The player will donate 150 tickets and 150 Amway-branded replica jersey shirts to underprivileged children.

First 5,000 Fans at Home Opener to Receive a Free Earthquakes Replica Jersey Shirt

The Earthquakes season opener against the New England Revolution on Saturday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m. is fast approaching. The first 5,000 fans in attendance at Buck Shaw Stadium will receive an Earthquakes Amway Global-branded replica jersey shirt.

Quakes Fans in San Francisco can get a Ride to Home Opener with the First Kick Bus Trip

The Earthquakes are offering a special deal for fans in San Francisco that want to come out to watch the Quakes home opener vs. the New England Revolution on Saturday, March 21. For only $25, fans will not only get a ticket to the game, but a ride to and from as well. Fans will be picked up from one of the four San Francisco pubs listed below, and will ride down to the game in a bus full of other Quakes supporters, and then back to the pub you started at following the game. Participating pubs in San Francisco include Kezar Pub on Stanyan, Mad Dog in the Fog on Haight, Pig 'N Whistle on Geary and Danny Coyle's on Haight. Buses will be at each location for pick up at 5:00 P.M. and will be heading back to SF promptly following the game. Please call 408-556-7700 to reserve your spot.

Quakes Split Two Exhibition Matches While in Los Angeles

The Earthquakes lost 2-1 for the first time this preseason to the Colorado Rapids on Monday, March 2 in Los Angeles in a rematch of their Feb. 27 tilt. Quincy Amarikwa scored against the Rapids. The Quakes then defeated Chivas USA 1-0 on Wednesday, March 4 at the Home Depot Center to improve to 5-1 in the preseason. Cam Weaver scored his fourth goal of the preseason in the seventh minute off of a low cross from Arturo Alvarez. The Quakes defense posted their fourth shutout of the preseason, with Joe Cannon in net for this one.

Preseason Schedule

The San Jose Earthquakes have played six of their eight scheduled preseason matches so far, earning wins over Seattle Sounders FC, the Houston Dynamo, Fresno Fuego, Colorado Rapids and Chivas USA. Ryan Johnson and Cam Weaver lead the team in goals in preseason with four in six matches against non-collegiate opponents. Below is the team's full preseason schedule:
