Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings hosted a news conference today to unveil their special third jersey that they'll be wearing for their upcoming Military Appreciation Night Saturday January 17th against the Chilliwack Bruins.

The sweater will be a unique collector's item that will only be worn once by the hockey club and auctioned off after the game to raise money for the Edmonton Garrison's Military Family Resource Centre. The club hosted a similar post-game auction on the concourse for last season's Rodeo Kings' jerseys that raised over $24,000 for the Edmonton Rodeo Cowboy Benevolent Foundation.

The sweaters feature the same camouflage pattern found on Canadian Soldiers uniforms as well as a special shoulder patch paying tribute to the 3 branches of the Canadian Military. The inscription 'January 2009' is also found on the back collar of the jersey with the Oil Kings crown displayed prominently on the front.

The game on the 17th will be tribute to all Canadian Military and the Edmonton Garrison has chosen to highlight 1 Combat Engineer Regiment. Master Warrant Officer Eugene Sharpe ,a Squadron Sgt-Major at 1 CER, says soldiers at CFB Edmonton are really looking forward to the night and really appreciate the support soldiers in the Edmonton area receive from organizations such as the Oil Kings.

"CFB Edmonton is proud to honor 1 Combat Engineer Regiment. It's fitting that we'll recognize this group because some members are currently deployed in Afghanistan and their families back home appreciate that people are taking the time to notice and extend a warm thank you for the sacrifice they've made. This is also a unit that was once stationed in Chilliwack so it's fitting that the Oil Kings will play the Bruins that night too."

"The Military Family Resource Centre is overwhelmed by the support shown by the Edmonton Oil Kings Hockey Club." said the MFRC Marketing and Communications Coordinator Kate Banadyga. " Their generous donation will contribute greatly towards our programs and services at the Centre including a Grief Support Group, Deployment Reunion Program and our Child Development Programs."

There will be a special ceremonial face-off Saturday evening and the first 2500 fans at Rexall Place will receive a free Oil Kings camouflage t-shirt.

January 17th is also a Rain Check Night for Oil Kings Season Seat Holders and Founders Club Members. There has been an overwhelming response from the fans who want to donate their unused tickets to Military families.
