CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Outfielder Mitch Einertson has been selected Topps Player of the Year in the Carolina League for 2007. Einertson receives the George M. Trautman Award, presented annually in each of the 16 domestic Minor Leagues by the Topps Company of New York in conjunction with Minor League Baseball.
Einertson, who completed his fourth season in the Astros organization in 2007, tied for the Carolina League lead with a .305 average. He topped the circuit in doubles with 40 and tied for second in the league with 54 extra-base hits. Einertson also finished second in RBIs (87), fourth in hits (136) and fifth in slugging percentage (.482).
Spending most of his time in center field for the Salem (VA) Avalanche, Einertson tied for the league lead in assists by an outfielder with 14. The California native saw significant playing time in both left field and right field.
A fifth-round selection of the Astros in the 2004 draft out of Rancho Buena Vista High School in the San Diego area, Einertson was named the Carolina League MVP at season's end. This year's Player of the Year honor from Topps and Minor League Baseball is the second such award for Einertson, who garnered similar recognition in his rookie season in 2004 while playing for Greeneville of the Appalachian League.
Einertson, who has an opportunity to play for the Hooks in 2008, was the only Astros farmhand to be recognized by Topps and Minor League Baseball. The right-handed hitter is currently batting .310 with three home runs and eight RBIs in nine games played for the Mesa Solar Sox in the Arizona Fall League.
