Jackals pump Beacons, but fall short of big weekend

GAME RESULTS:

2/4/04 RICHMOND 3 - Jackals 0

Once again the Jackals went on the road, out shot their opponents, and yet failed to win the hockey game. Elmira led in shots, 32-29, but did not find the net, courtesy of Komets' goaltender Kevin St. Pierre. The shutout for St. Pierre was his 5th of the season. Kevin Kotyluk scored twice in the first period, Steve Rodberg and David-Andre Beauregard struck in frame two, and Danny Stewart capped off the night with a goal in the third. Jackals' goaltender Ryan McIntosh made some phenomenal saves in the contest, stopping 24-of-29 in the lost in front of 7,775 fans at the Allan County War Memorial Coliseum.

2/6/04 RICHMOND 3 - Jackals 2 (SO)

The Jackals artillery absolutely bombarded the net of Maxime Gingras for 60 minutes of intense hockey action at the First Arena Friday night, but despite 42 shots on goal, Elmira could only muster two goals. The Jackals took the lead 20 seconds into the second period as LW J.F. Boutin charged past the defense and finished past a sprawling Gingras. Seven minutes later David Brosseau equalized, the first of two goals for the Richmond forward. Brosseau scored his second at the fourteen minute mark to put the Riverdogs ahead for the first time in the contest, but the lead would not hold. Rookie Trevor Segstro, scoring his sixth of the season, tipped Anthony Cappelletti's shot from the point past Gingras to tie the game at two. An intense third period from the Jackals where Elmira out shot Richmond 12-6 failed to produce the game winner and this contest was forced into a shootout. In the extra session Richmond grabbed a 2-0 advantage, but Don Smith roofed his 4th round attempt over a fallen Gingras to keep Elmira alive, but it was not to be; the Jackals feel 3-2 (2-1 in the shootout). Ryan McIntosh was equally stellar in net for the Jackals, stopping 19 of 21, which Gingras had 40 saves for his 23rd win of the year.

2/7/03 JACKALS 8 - Port Huron 1

Score eight goals and walk out with two points. That's just what the doctor ordered for the Elmira Jackals as they breezed past the Port Huron Beacons Saturday night 8-1 at the First Arena. The offensive explosion was the second highest goal total for Elmira this season; they scored a 9-4 win at Port Huron in November. The Jackals blew out of the gates and took a 4-0 lead after the first period. Trevor Segstro, Don Smith (shorthanded), Eddy Lowe and Mike Thompson all lit the lamp as this game was over before the midway point. After a scoreless second period, Port Huron ended Ryan McIntosh's hopes for a shutout when Barry McKinlay scored 58 second into the third. But Elmira would answer emphatically with four straight goals, cruising to victory. Randy Murphy scored his 14th of the year, Thompson got his second of the night, and then J.F. Boutin finished the evening with two straight goals to cap off a great night in Elmira. McIntosh stopped 39 shots for the win, while Kory Cooper and Stu Dunn split the punishment, turning away a combined 30 of 38 shots from the Jackals.

2/8/03 ADIRONDACK 3 - Jackals 2

The Jackals could not take the momentum of Saturday's colossal win into their Sunday matinee with Adirondack. The IceHawks would score all of their goals first, getting two in the first period on Ryan McIntosh, then a quick goal to start the second against replacement Peter Aubry. But the Jackals fought back in the name of Don Smith. Smith tucked a backhand shot under the cross bar late in period two which put Elmira on the board. Halfway through the final frame, Smith tipped in a shot from Trevor Burgess with two seconds left on the power play. Elmira pulled Aubry and fought to the finish but they could not get the equalizer past Scott Dickie who was spectacular, stopping 43 of 45 for the IceHawks.

JACKALS PLAYER AND GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK: (WEEK 15)

J.F. Boutin - LW 4 GP, 3 goals, 2 assists, 3 pts, +3

Left wing J.F. Boutin barely edged Don Smith and Mike Thompson for the Jackals Player of the Week honors. Boutin's five points led the team through a strenuous 4 games-in-five-days week, which saw the Jackals spread the wealth throughout the team, rather than banking the goals on one player. Boutin's goal sent Elmira to a shootout Friday night against Richmond and the 27-year old scored two goals in the 8-1 romp over Port Huron Saturday night.

Ryan McIntosh - G 3 GP, 1-0-1, 2.15 GAA, .926 SV%, 63 saves

Goaltender Ryan McIntosh shined in between the pipes for the Jackals. Starting all three games of the Jackals' First Arena triple-header, McIntosh nearly earned Elmira two points Friday night against Richmond, allowing just two goals in regulation and stopping 3-of-5 in the shootout. Saturday night he was one shot away from his first shutout of the season, turning in an immaculate 39 save performance as Elmira disposed of Port Huron 8-1. Mac started Sunday's matinee against Adirondack, but was pulled after allowing two goals in the first period; he did not receive the loss in that game. The 27-year old allowed just 5 goals in the week, which equates to a 2.15 GAA.

JACKAL BITES:

· A NEW LEADER - Center Don Smith passed Greg Koehler to become the Jackals leading scorer this year. Smith has 47 points on the season.

· BEACON SNUFFER - Ryan McIntosh had a phenomenal week, amassing a 2.15 goals against average in three starts. Mac's highlight was a 39 save effort in an 8-1 win over Port Huron.

· MORE NEWS FROM MR. SMITH - Don Smith did not lead the Jackals in scoring this week, but he came very close. His four points (3 goals, 1 assist) included a power play goal, his first short handed goal of the year, and a game winning goal against Port Huron.

· LEADING BY EXAMPLE - Team Captain Mike Thompson energized the Jackals to an offensive explosion Saturday night get his first multi-goal game of the year. Thompson had 4 points in the week (2 goals, 2 assists) and finished +3.

· BACKWARDS THINKING - Maybe getting more shots than your opponent is a bad thing. The Jackals were out-shot 39-30 by Port Huron as they smacked around the Beacons 8-1. Sunday afternoon, the Jackals peppered the Adirondack net, out-shooting the IceHawks 44-23, but lost 3-2. Thursday Elmira had a 29-22 advantage but were shutout 3-0 to the Riverdogs. Friday the Jackals out-shot Richmond 40-19 but lost 3-2 in a shootout.

· TRANSACTIONS/PLAYER NEWS - D Cal Benazic was placed on the 21-day IR on Thursday (knee). Jaime Thompson is on the 14-day IR, but may be available for Wednesday in Adirondack. LW Greg Koehler is on a call up with the San Antonio Rampage (AHL). D Mark Jerant remains on call up with Hershey (AHL). RW Carl Drakensjo might also come off the IR for Wednesday's game, but is still on the 21-day IR.
