901 FC Look to Defeat Eleven for Second Time in Indy
July 16, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Memphis 901 FC News Release
Memphis, Tenn. - Memphis 901 FC will wrap up its second-longest road trip of the 2021 season on Saturday in Indianapolis. Building off its first-ever win over Indy Eleven earlier this season, Memphis will travel to Michael A. Carroll Stadium to face its divisional opponent this Saturday, July 17 at 6:00 p.m. CT. The match will be aired on CW30 Memphis and ESPN+.
Just like it did in Indianapolis on June 5, Memphis 901 FC is coming off a win over the Central Division leader at the time in Birmingham Legion FC last Saturday. Propelled to victory by a 53' goal from forward Kyle Murphy and a decisive eight-save match from newcomer Kyle Morton, Memphis 901 FC defeated rival Birmingham Legion FC in shutout fashion. With his fourth goal in three matches, Kyle Murphy has been in scintillating form over the past few matches as the New York native now sits at a tie for fourth in club history and eleventh in the league with his five goals scored this season. Another key figure in the 0-1 win at BBVA Compass Field was goalkeeper Kyle Morton. In his first match between the posts for Memphis, the Houston Dynamo FC loanee registered several acrobatic saves en route to a USL Championship Player of the Week recognition, Nobody Trashes Tennessee Clean Sheet, Buff City Soap Man of the Match honor and crucial victory.
While Memphis currently sits at eighth in the division with 12 points on the year, just three points separate eighth from fourth place in the Central Division and Memphis has already defeated two teams above the playoff line in Birmingham Legion FC and Indy Eleven. Working with a two-match unbeaten streak, Memphis will look to knock off an Indy Eleven team that has struggled to find a win after leading the division not long ago. After a strong start to the season, Indy Eleven currently find itself at fourth in the Central Division standings as the club has just one win since May 29 and has not won a game at home since May 22.
Looking to capitalize on its five goals in its last three matches, Memphis 901 FC will look to start off strong as six of Indy's 15 goals allowed this season have come in the opening 20 minutes of play. While Indy has played in two more matches this season than Memphis, both teams find themselves in similar statistical rankings as the two sides have comparable numbers of goals (Indy, +3), clean sheets (Memphis, +1), yellow cards (equivalent), shots (Indy, +4) and goals conceded (Indy +2).
Individually, Indy's Jordan Hamilton leads the club and is tied for twentieth in the league with four goals so far this season. Newcomer Manuel Arteaga has knocked in an additional three goals in his first season with the club as the Venezuelan currently leads the league with 34 shots. Adding to the attacking corps, midfielder Nicky Law is tied for eighth in USL Championship play with 22 chances created.
In the four previous meetings between the two sides, the advantage has swung the way of Indy for the first few matches before Memphis claimed its first win over the side earlier this season via a 2-1 victory at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on June 5. With the first two encounters this season coming in Indianapolis, the final two meetings will be held at AutoZone Park on Sept. 22 and Oct. 30 to close the regular season.
