Inland Empire 66ers News Release
San Bernardino, CA - Saturday's 4-1 victory over the Giants was arguably the 66ers' best win of 2008.
That was until Sunday rolled around.
Timely hitting, superb pitching and solid, errorless defense added up to a 66ers (11-20) win over the Giants (19-11) by a 7-0 final score.
Cody White (2-2) worked out of a couple jams early while shutting down the team with the best batting average in the league. His biggest Houdini act was in the third inning. With one out and the bases loaded Ryan Rohlinger bounced into a 6-4-3 double play which ended a golden opportunity for San Jose. It was Rohlinger who started a string of 21 straight batters who would not get a base knock for San Jose as the Giants last hit was Pablo Sandoval's single in the third.
Paul Koss tossed three scoreless innings and lowered his earned run average to 1.42. Jacobo Meque finished the game out with a scoreless ninth, but his ERA stayed the same. It remains at 0.00.
The 66ers pounded out nine hits, five of which went for extra bases. Bridger Hunt in the lead off role had a run batted in, scored once and legged-out two doubles. Carlos Santana had three hits, two doubles, two RBI and scored a tally. Matt Berezay tripled for the second straight game and scored in the second inning. Last but not least, Josh Bell had two singles, scored twice and picked up an RBI in the three hole.
Clayton Tanner (2-2) was tattooed on the mound by the 66ers. The lefty pitched two plus frames giving up six runs, five earned, on six hits, walked one and fanned one. The Giants offense had four hits, all singles.
San Jose had entered the game with .294 team batting average and staff ERA of 3.09. Both were, by far, tops in each category.
