Tulsa, Okla., Mar. 12, 2009 - Gary Forbes led all scorers with 25 points while grabbing 10 rebounds, as the Tulsa 66ers defeated the Iowa Energy 108-107, in an overtime thriller during the Kids Day game at the SpiritBank Event Center in Tulsa on Thursday. It was Forbes' second double-double in a 66ers uniform this season.
With the 66ers ahead 106-102 after a Derrick Dial layup and 1:17 remaining in overtime, the Energy's Courtney Sims made a layup and was fouled. Sims missed the free throw but Iowa's Mark Tyndale collected the rebound and put back to tie the game with less than minute remaining. Forbes buried two free throws and Iowa's Othyus Jeffers missed one of two for the final score of the game.
Shaun Livingston dished out 11 assists in his third game with the 66ers, while Herbert Hill added 19 points and 10 rebounds in his first game since being acquired by Tulsa yesterday.
"It was a heck of an effort by everyone on our team," 66ers Head Coach Paul Woolpert said. "That includes two guys that have had little to no practice time."
The Energy jumped out to an early eight-point lead after two Sims free throws, but Tulsa answered with an 8-4 run capped by a Moses Ehambe three-pointer that cut the Iowa lead to 17-15 with 3:21 remaining in the first quarter. Hill led the 66ers with eight points and three rebounds at the break.
The back-and-forth affair continued as the teams exchanged 8-0 runs in the first half of the second quarter, and a Sims layup tied the game at 35 apiece. Led by Forbes' eight points in the quarter, the 66ers shot 52 percent in the period. The teams went into halftime tied at 48.
The biggest lead of the game was eight points for both teams, as they exchanged 15 lead changes and were tied 24 times throughout the contest. Tulsa was outrebounded 57-45, but blocked 11 shots compared to one for the Energy. The 66ers converted 43 field goals for the game off of 34 assists.
"We passed the ball extremely well today," Woolpert said.
The Energy were led by Sims with 23 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, while Denham Brown put up 21 points off the bench. Jeffers added 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Curtis Stinson added 17 points and a game-high 16 assists.
Led by Forbes and Hill, Tulsa's Derrick Dial added 19 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, three steals and three blocks. Moses Ehambe contributed 13 points off the bench, while Jeremy Kelly had 12 points, six rebounds and six assists. Yemi Ogunoye finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Iowa (22-15) travels back home to face the Erie BayHawks on Sunday before heading back out on a five-game road trip.
Tulsa (8-29) stays home to take on the Austin Toros tomorrow night before a three-game road trip tips off on Sunday at Albuquerque.
